April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month

In the month of April, the Oral Cancer Foundation observes Oral Cancer Awareness Month. This year, Advanced Dental Care of Anderson is hopping on board, urging our patients to “check their mouth.”

Oral cancer will affect about 51,500 individuals this year and only 40% are expected to survive. This number is not meant to scare you, it is meant to empower you. Oral cancer is highly preventable and curable if you are mindful of your dental health. This blog will cover everything you need to know about the prevention, symptoms, and detection of oral cancer!

How to Prevent Oral Cancer

When we think about oral health, we often think of regular cleanings and brushing our teeth twice a day. But part of maintaining good dental health is actively taking steps to prevent oral cancer. You can do this by:

1. Eliminating the use of tobacco products.
2. Only drinking alcohol in moderation.
3. Getting regular examinations and oral cancer screenings.
4. Getting the HPV vaccine.
5. Protecting your lips from sun damage.

Common Symptoms of Oral Cancer

See a dentist immediately if you notice any of the following symptoms:

• Sores in your mouth that don’t heal
• Red or white patches inside your mouth
• Loose permanent teeth
• Mouth or ear pain
• Difficulty swallowing
• Lump inside your mouth
• Unexplained oral bleeding

How do you detect oral cancer?

During your oral cancer screening and examination, Dr. Elbrecht or Dr. Summerlin will look for reddish or white colored patches and mouth sores. He may also feel around your gums and for lumps or anything else out of the ordinary.

These examinations are critical for early detection of oral cancer. If caught early enough, mouth cancer is very curable.
